Magazine Moments is a feature from Eileen in our Technical Services department. In addition to many other duties, Eileen receives and processes all of the magazines for our collection. She gets to see everything that’s new and exciting in these magazines before anyone else, so she’s offered to share some of what caught her eye this month in Magazine Moments.
Midwest Living celebrates the unique and surprising Midwest region through its food, travel destinations, lifestyle, homes, and gardens. Midwest Living is available through Zinio or for physical checkout in the library.
In this month’s issue, author Trevor Meers encourages us to embrace winter with his article, How to Own Winter: 12 Reasons Wind Chill Doesn’t Have Be A Buzzkill. Just a few of his ideas are listed below.
Skate In The Park – A curving quarter-mile track in Chicago’s new Maggie Daley Park is, literally, a skate in the park. This activity combines the fun of skating with beautiful views of the city. As an added bonus, it’s a great workout!
Step Through The Desert’s Door – Just because it’s not yet warm outside, doesn’t mean you can’t pretend! Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has exhibits that re-create three desert ecosystems.
Get Fat On A Bike – “Fat bikes” are made to help you float over snow. The epicenter for the beefy-tired bikes is the college town of Marquette in Michigan’s upper peninsula, but you’ll find outfitters renting the bikes all over states like Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The author lists a variety of additional activities including zip-lining, exploring ice caves, visiting a sauna, and more. For more wintertime weekend destinations, check out the article online through Zinio or on the shelf here at the library.
