Have you ever thought, even for a passing moment, about writing your first novel? From just an idea you think is completely unique and inspired to making it 20,000 words in before fizzing out? Troy Public Library is offering the chance to tackle that bucket list goal by cranking out 50,000 words in a single month, and we want you to be a part of it!
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought fleetingly about writing a novel.
Writers of all levels are welcome to earn prizes simply by writing! Try to write a 50,000 word novel in one month or just increase your writing productivity. Prizes will be awarded at word count milestones (10,000 – 20,000 – 30,000 – 40,000 – 50,000 words) and a grand prize will be raffled off at the end.
To register, just stop by the Adult Services Reference Desk any time after October 25th, pick up your orientation packet, and go! You can also register by calling the Reference Desk at 248-524-3534, or emailing your name, phone number, and email address to ASRef@troymi.gov with the subject line “NaNoWriMo Challenge.”
For those of us that have struggled and beat our heads against the wall desperate to crank out 10,000 words in time for some academic deadline or other, 50,000 words is a daunting task. If you’re concerned and don’t think you’re capable of making it through this challenge, keep in mind that you won’t be doing it alone! Just remember that we at the library and the rest of the Troy writing community are here to support you every step of the way! There is nothing wrong or incomplete with starting to write and not making it to 50,000 words. Making it to 10,000 words, or however far you might be able to get, is a triumph to be proud of in its own right. The purpose is to inspire creativity and growth in writing, and that can be achieved well before the 50k mark. We do have prize packages and entries into the grand prize raffle at each 10k milestone, so don’t think that any effort you put in that does not reach 50,000 words will go unnoticed.
If you decide to participate, you should consider joining in some of our events taking place over the course of the month. This will be a great way for you to brainstorm, stay motivated, and connect with other residents taking the 50k plunge down the rabbit hole. On Tuesday, November 3rd, we’re throwing an opening party in our Meeting Room. With writing tips and party games to get you in the novelist mood, this could be the best way to jumpstart your story. We also have three Come Write In programs, every Thursday in November (except Thanksgiving), featuring guest speakers talking not only about the writing process, but also publication and avenues to explore if you want to continue with your story after November 30th. All of these programs do require registration. You can register yourself by following the links to each program from www.troypl.org/nanowrimo, or call the Technology Desk at 248-524-3542 to register for as many as you can attend.
Thank you to the Friends of the Troy Public Library for their support in the NaNoWriMo Challenge. Their contributions to the program have been invaluable in facilitating the growth of not only the challenge but the TPL writing community.
We hope to see you alongside us on this novel endeavor!
