Programs

The Troy Public Library offers programs intended to further the Library’s mission to be recognized by the community as a vital force; transforming minds, changing lives, promoting literacy, providing cultural enrichment and embracing the diversity of our evolving city.

Programs are a means through which the public can share experiences, appreciate special interests, and exchange information.  All programs shall be open to the general public; however some programs may be designed with specific audiences in mind, such as children’s programs and story times. Programs targeted toward specific audiences will be publicized as such.

Programs offered at the Troy Public Library are offered free of charge, although at the discretion of the Library Director, the following will be permissible at Library-sponsored programs:

  • Fundraising to benefit the Library, sponsored by the Friends of the Troy Public Library
  • Fundraising to benefit the Library, sponsored by a local business or agency.

The Library will endeavor to include a broad spectrum of opinions and a variety of viewpoints in Library-sponsored programs and exhibits.  Library-sponsored programs are information-based. If you wish to promote a business, publication, or service, we suggest that you contact the Troy Community Center to see if meeting space is available.

All author programs are library-sponsored programs.  Please be advised that no exchange of funds (i.e. book sales) is permitted in the library’s meeting room.

If you would like to have a program that is sponsored by the Troy Public Library, please submit a proposal here no later than 60 days before the program date that includes:

  • The proposed date and time of your program
  • The topic of your program
  • Your target audience
  • Length of your proposed program
  • Equipment needed

Your proposal will be reviewed by the Library Director and/or relevant department heads. Appeals for exceptions to these policies must be made in writing to the Director of the Troy Public Library.

The Troy Public Library reserves the right to promote library-sponsored programs as it sees fit. Such promotion may include, but is not limited to the use of social media, in-house marketing, photography, video, print and online media. The Troy Public Library reserves the right to reproduce, copy, exhibit, publish, broadcast or distribute images in any and all videotapes and photographs taken of program attendees while participating in programs, watching and traveling to or from the activity for promotional purposes.

Library-sponsored programs may be offered at locations outside the library as well as onsite.  Such locations may include schools, community centers, information fairs, and area businesses. The Library will endeavor to offer an equitable number of programs throughout the city, although factors such as staffing levels and size and existence of a programming room will influence the number and types of programs able to be offered.

The Troy Public Library will be held harmless from all liability for all types of damages or injuries, whether foreseeable or not, sustained by program attendees while participating, watching and traveling to or from Library activities.

Every attempt will be made to accommodate all who wish to attend a program. However, when safety or the success of a program requires it, attendance may be limited. When limits must be established, attendance will be determined on a first come, first served basis, either with advanced registration or at the door.

Library sponsorship of a program does not constitute or imply an endorsement of its policies, beliefs, or program by any library personnel or by the City of Troy.

The library does not offer programs of a commercial nature.  Library-sponsored programs must have a special educational, informational, or cultural value to the community. Examples of programs that would be considered of a commercial nature include but are not limited to presentations offered for free but with the intention of soliciting future business.

The library does not offer programs that support or oppose any political candidate or ballot measure. However, election information, such as candidates’ forums that include invitations to all recognized candidates, may be offered. Because it is not consistent with passive distribution, materials asking for library visitors to sign a petition or letter are not permitted at candidates’ forums or other library programs.

Library-sponsored programs shall comply with all City ordinances and laws of the State of Michigan and the United States.

The City of Troy assumes no responsibility, financial or otherwise, for accidents or injuries sustained by individuals or groups of individuals, while attending a library-sponsored program.
