Zoom is a video conferencing software that you can use from your home computer or mobile device to participate in library programs (or connect with family and friends) while staying safe at home. It’s completely free, and easy to set up. If you having any trouble downloading Zoom or have questions about using Zoom at any point, please give the TPL Technology Desk a call at 248.524.3542.
How Do I Use Zoom? You’ll need to download the Zoom software before you can join a Zoom meeting (just click the “download” button). Once you’ve downloaded and opened Zoom, you can click on “Join Zoom Meeting”. You can create your own Zoom account, or join some Zoom meetings (such as our library programs) without an account.
Here’s a quick video tutorial:
Next, enter the meeting ID from the confirmation email that you received when you registered for the program. You can also join simply by clicking the link in the confirmation email.
Once you’ve joined the meeting and opened Zoom, you’ll see a window that shows your own face (if your device has a camera). When you join a Zoom program, you can use video and/or audio. If your device doesn’t have a built-in camera and/or microphone, you will need an external webcam and mic if you want to participate with your own image and voice.
Ready to give it a try? Register for one or more of our upcoming events at troypl.org/calendar. Here's a link to a test meeting for practice: https://zoom.us/test. We recommend you log into Zoom a few minutes before the start of the meeting so we can help you with any technical issues you may have.
- If your camera is on, everyone can see you! Please be mindful of any behavior that could be distracting for other viewers (yawning, walking around, eating, etc.).
- Please mute your microphone when you are not speaking. This will cut down on any background noise during the program. Some events may automatically mute participants to allow all attendees to clearly hear the presenter.

- Zoom links for library programs should never be shared with other people.
Remember, if you need any assistance with downloading Zoom, using Zoom, or have additional questions, please call the TPL Technology Desk at 248.524.3542.
