Memory Care Kits for Dementia Patients

Memory Care Kits are bundles of items geared specifically toward dementia patients and their caregivers. In each kit, you will find a collection of materials – books, music CDs, games, and activities – that are designed to trigger special memories of life experiences and encourage interaction between patients and caregivers. Universal Access Collection for Patrons with Disabilities
The Universal Access Collection houses a variety of materials for those with differing abilities (including, but not limited to, patrons with physical disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and developmental disabilities), as well as those who work with them. The collection includes books (including fiction, informational, and braille), magnifiers, adapted and therapeutic toys, learning manipulatives, assistive devices, and more, with a goal of providing more equitable access to library resources for patrons whose needs are not being met by other, traditional library collections.

Universal Access Workstation for Patrons with Disabilities
The Universal Access Workstation is a designated computer terminal equipped with assistive software and hardware that add needed accessibility for many with cognitive and intellectual difficulties, speech and language disorders, learning disabilities, vision impairments, and other needs. The Workstation includes a voice-to-text program, an assistive reading/writing program, and a software program that allows the computer to be controlled via capability switches. Hardware, including a capability switch, a combination headphone/microphone headset, and a document camera, is also available for use. The Workstation aims to provide more universal access to the digital resources and public computing options available at the Troy Public Library.

3 Computers with JAWS Screen Readers 
Computer screen reader program for Microsoft Windows that allows blind and visually impaired users to read the screen either with a text-to-speech output or by a refreshable Braille display.

Adult Services Large Print collection
Large print books are printed in 14 point font or larger type. The font is usually dark and plain, making it easier to read. Often large print books are designed to be lightweight and easy to hold. The large print book collection contains many works of popular fiction, such as mysteries, westerns, romance and classics. It also contains nonfiction subjects such as biographies, medicine, health, cookbooks, current affairs, hobbies and other topics. Search our catalog and select "Large Print" for the format.

Portable, pocket-sized devices which, when run over text, instantly display definitions and read the words aloud. They also scan and capture lines of text for uploading to a PC or Mac into nearly any application.
